If what "works" in the latest fitness programs has you running in circles, check out this list of programs and what they entail before you commit to buying a home program or paying that hefty gym-membership fee.

Zumba is a modern dance class disguised as a high-impact, calorie-burning fitness program. Incorporating hip-hop, soca, samba, salsa, merengue, mambo and martial arts, Zumba is incredibly popular with approximately 14 million people taking weekly classes in more than 185 countries. You can either join a local class or do the workouts from DVDs or YouTube videos in the privacy of your home.

Spinning, or indoor cycling, requires that you own a spinning cycle or have a membership in a gym offering classes. As you might expect, spinning is heavy on cardio and should be used in conjunction with other exercise.

CrossFit mixes high-intensity interval training, Olympic weightlifting, plyometrics, powerlifting, gymnastics, kettle-bell sport, calisthenics, and strongman exercises. There are more than 9,000 affiliated gyms worldwide. While CrossFit workouts can be done from home at no cost, most require expensive specialized weights or training equipment. If you’re just getting started, joining a local CrossFit gym is the most cost-effective option.

P90X is an inexpensive home workout program designed as a 90-day "boot camp" for getting into shape. The training program mixes weight training, martial arts, yoga, calisthenics, and periodization, combined with a nutrition and dietary supplement plan. The program requires purchase of the DVD set and additional exercise equipment, but it is relatively inexpensive compared to CrossFit or a long-term gym membership.

Insanity is a 60-day home workout regimen similar to P90X (both are produced by the same company). Workouts only use the body for weight resistance. Due to the intensity, the system is designed only for those who are already fit. Insanity workouts concentrate on interval training: working out strenuously for 3 to 4 minutes, then resting for approximately 30 seconds before repeating the process. There is no need to purchase any equipment.

Yoga was popularized as a system of physical exercise in the U.S. during the 1980’s. As with any fitness regimen, there are different techniques and teachers, offering many at-home or classroom-style options for learning. The following styles are the more popular in the west:
  • Iyengar yoga is the most popular type practiced in the U.S. The yoga poses are usually held longer than in other schools of yoga, and include the use of props like belts, chairs, blocks, and blankets to help accommodate any injuries or structural imbalances.

  • Bikram yoga is also called "hot yoga" due to the nearly 100 degree temperatures used in the workout studios, which are designed to replicate the climate of yoga’s birthplace in India. It is taught that the heat helps to remove toxins from the body through sweating.

  • Power yoga is just how it sounds, an Americanized form of yoga introduced in 1995. It is a fast-moving and rigorous workout to develop strength and flexibility.
As always, make sure to check with your doctor before beginning any diet or exercise program.
