Crash Course in Computer Backups

Crash Course in Computer Backups

Think for a minute about all the information stored on your computer. If you're like most people, you probably have years' worth of work, research, contacts, school work, and irreplaceable photos and videos.

But what happens when your computer just stops working? Do you have a plan to recover the data you need to run your life?

If you've never performed a computer backup, or it's been a while—the options below can help you quickly and conveniently protect your information before it's too late.

Prepare for landing: A crash may never happen to you, but it does happen. And making sure you can easily reinstall your operating system and any software you've purchased is a top priority. Make sure to put the installation disks that came with your computer, along with any other software you use regularly, in a safe and organized place. If you have more than one computer, make sure to label the various disks—don't rely on your memory. Disks and serial numbers are priceless in a crash scenario, so keep them in a safe place.

Head into the cloud: Storing your files off-site in the cloud will protect you from fire, theft and natural disaster—plus, you can access any file from anywhere in the world, as long as you have an internet connection. Services like Carbonite and Just Cloud even perform automated backups in the background, so you don't even need to think about backing up after the initial setup. And it's not as expensive as you might think. In fact, you can often get free space from providers like Google, Yahoo! and AOL.

Back in a flash: USB flash (or thumb) drives are an ideal, inexpensive way to backup small files for short periods of time. Whether you're moving information from one computer to another or you want to make sure critical company data doesn't get lost before a big presentation, these handy devices are well worth the peace of mind.

Feel the burn: Computers often come standard with CD/DVD burners. Most DVDs can hold 4.7 GB worth of data. To back up larger files, you can double the capacity with double-layer DVDs (known as DVD DL) that can hold up to 8.5 GB.

Drive like a pro: CDs and DVDs don't provide enough memory for most people to backup an entire hard drive, so to safeguard all your data add an external hard drive. It's now cost-effective to store up to 3 terabytes of data…that's a lot of digital digits!

Last resorts: If your computer crashes, you may still be able to recover some files. The cost depends on the type of damage the machine has sustained. Start with inexpensive data recovery software, such as SpinRite for Windows PCs or Alsoft's DiskWarrior for Mac—both retail for less than $100. And if all else fails, contact a local computer specialist.

The best way to protect yourself is to never let your computer go without backup! So take a few minutes out of your day to make sure your information and media are safe and secure.
