Handy Help for Procrastinators

Handy Help for Procrastinators

Do you find yourself regularly postponing, delaying, or deferring activities or projects, then feeling saddled with guilt and stress over it? You're not alone. The good news is procrastination is only a habit, and habits can be changed. Read on for some expert tips and insights for doing just that!

Create a daily to-do list with deadlines. It may seem counterintuitive, but creating a list with daily, weekly and monthly deadlines can help stop procrastination. Make sure to focus your list on things you might normally put off.

Do one thing at a time. Multitasking may feel good, but multitaskers are proven to be less efficient than more focused workers. Doing one thing at a time will also help with any feelings of being overwhelmed.

Try the two-minute rule for smaller tasks. David Allen, author of the bestselling "Getting Things Done," invented the two-minute rule: If a task takes less than two minutes to complete, do it right now.

Break large tasks into smaller steps. Sometimes we procrastinate because the task seems too overwhelming. In that case break the task down into the smallest possible steps, then focus on one step at a time.

Try timed work frenzies. Turn off every other distraction and set your smartphone, computer, or plain old kitchen egg timer for whatever period you're comfortable with—10, 30, or even 60 minutes—then give 100 percent focus to the task at hand. Make sure to take a break before you restart the clock.

Change your environment. Doing so can often alter your ability to focus. Reorganize your workspace or work at a coffee shop a few times per week.

Eliminate distractions. Website and social media bookmarks, email notifications, and smartphone alerts can add up as massive distractions. Minimize these interruptions by simply turning them off.

Get a buddy. Join forces with someone who wants to stop procrastinating, or better yet, learn from someone who is already highly motivated. Spending time with people who already possess what you want to achieve is a fast track to success.
