When it comes to managing those activities, flying by the seat of your pants is a fast track to burnout and exhaustion. Surviving this "juggle jungle" is about planning. More importantly, it's about creating memorable opportunities to teach kids about time management that will equip them for high school, college and a career in the future. Here are a few tips for keeping after-school activities fun and rewarding: Choose activities your children enjoy. Why run yourself ragged getting to practices if your children are miserable once you arrive? Whether the activity is meant to be a social outlet, exercise or for building skills, make sure it's something they'll enjoy long term. Plan out the week at a family meeting. Making decisions on the fly means making mistakes. Instead, get together as a family once per week, calendars in hand, to plan out the following week. Decide how each child will get to and from activities and determine what required gear, uniforms and supplies need to be ready. Also, make sure your schedule allows for homework and that meals and snacks are planned. Make it even more fun by ending each planning session with a movie or game night. Give kids as much control as they can handle. Empowering kids to manage their own time will give you more buy-in, and give them more confidence. First step: Show them how to manage a calendar and homework schedule. Make sure to check on their progress periodically to ensure they are staying on top of school work as well as managing their extracurricular activities. You may need more than one calendar.
