Trick or Teeth

Trick or Teeth

With two full months of treats and sweets on parade for the holiday season, kids need all the dental hygiene help they can get. Here are five ways to help ensure good dental habits stick:

Don't make it about candy versus cavities. Letting kids dig into trick-or-treat bags without guidelines or simply denying them all sweets in the name of cavities sends a wrong message. Engage kids in the conversation about how much candy is enough for one sitting. Also explain that it's not just candy that can lead to cavities. The key is moderation—and good brushing and flossing habits.

Set a treat time. Establishing a specific "sweet time" can help kids think less about sweets throughout the day. Having sweets close to mealtimes also helps avoid extra wear and tear on tooth enamel.

Get in a teeth-brushing routine. Set routine times for tooth care. And, no matter what "sweet time" you set for treats, get your kids in the habit of brushing soon after to help clean away harmful residues. Mouth rinses also help prevent tooth decay. Parents should help with brushing until children are 7 or 8 years old and offer friendly reminders to older children to brush and floss up until high school, when it will be a well-established habit.

Keep it fun. Halloween is a great time to replace toothbrushes, which should be done every three or four months. Letting kids pick their own toothbrush and toothpaste can help them stay excited about brushing. Check the condition of your child's toothbrush every few weeks. If it doesn't look worn after some use, extra instruction on brushing techniques might be needed.

Keep kids on their toes. Chewable tablets used by dentists temporarily stain any plaque build-up on teeth. Parents can use them once a week as a fun way to reveal how well kids are brushing and flossing. A 20-pack of tablets costs about $7*. As always, be sure to check with your dentist to see what he or she would recommend.

Halloween and the entire holiday season through New Year's Day provide some great opportunities to teach kids dental hygiene habits to last as long as their holiday memories. Give these tips a try!
