How to Start a Successful Blog

Everybody has something they'd like to tell the world, and technology has made saying it impossibly easy through blogs. Whether your message has to do with your existing business, a new venture or your favorite hobby, here are eight basics to keep in mind in order to begin blog life:

Clearly define your target audience, so you can develop the right content specifically for your niche. In turn, the more narrowly you can define content topics, the easier it is to attract your "tribe." Include demographics as well as interest in your definition.

Give your blog a twist or angle that sets you apart. Chances are there's a blog on your topic already, so instead of trying to achieve total originality, make sure content is well researched, well written and infused with your unique personality. For example, there's an economist who writes 70 words on the economy daily in his blog Econ70 or the bargain-hunting maven who writes Thrifty Nifty Mom.

Make it look professional. People should be able to navigate your blog, get in touch with you and read the content without difficulty. Avoid hard-to-read color combinations, excessive pop-ups and advertising or distracting animations that can't be turned off by readers.

Follow other blogs on your topic and study both content and delivery. Can you refine, improve or expand upon these topics or deliver in a more interesting way?

You don't have to publish on a schedule, but ... if you want to establish committed readership, you should publish regularly. Don't promise daily or weekly updates, then deliver monthly. Commit and deliver, so your audience knows what to expect.

Build community around your content by encouraging feedback and comments. Make sure to incorporate social media "Share" buttons into your entries, so readers can easily spread your content to their own tribe. Most blogging platforms offer easy to install widgets to accomplish this. Don't forget to quickly acknowledge people taking the time to write.

Be patient while your audience builds. Unless you're already famous, building an audience takes time. One easy way to grow your audience is guest blogging—offering to write a free post for a publication or blog that has a larger audience than you do. Look for online magazines and blogs indirectly related to your topic for options. Achieving high readership may also require you to market and advertise your blog.

Edit and proofread carefully before you hit the "Publish" button. Proper spelling, punctuation and grammar will reinforce your credibility. Enlist a friend to proofread your posts. Be open to critiques, and never beat yourself up for mistakes. The more you write, the better you'll write.

There's practically no end to the conversations you can create and the connections you can make with a blog. Best of luck!
