Travel Scam Update

Whether you're planning travel inside or outside the country, make note: Taking advantage of tourists is a cottage industry. Familiarize yourself and family members with these common scams so you don't fall victim:

Family photos make great souvenirs ... until a seemingly friendly local offers to snap a group photo for you, then tries extorting a payment for the courtesy or runs off with your camera or smartphone.

What to do: Refuse offers that corner you into handing over anything of value. If you want a group photo, ask an official, a guide or an obvious tourist for help.

Busy trains are hot spots for pickpockets. Professional thieves can lift wallets, purses, mobile devices or anything else of value, and you often won't notice until later.

What to do: Keep your valuables in a front pocket, inside pocket or money belt. Instruct kids to secure their valuables when walking through crowded areas like terminals or trains.

Friendship bracelets are fun and colorful, and kids love to take them home. But if someone suddenly begins weaving a bracelet around your wrist without permission, watch out. Scammers will request payment, and if you refuse the requested sum they will create a scene to pressure you. A fellow schemer might also pick your pocket during the confusion.

What to do: Just keep walking. Be aware of your personal space, and don't allow anyone to enter it, touch you or come into contact with your family members. Ask your hotel or a professional guide for the safest places to stop for souvenirs and trinkets.

If you see a dropped wallet on the ground it may prompt you to check your person to see if yours is still there. Thieves are watching passers-by in order to note this involuntary body language and then follow the unsuspecting mark until he's in position to be fleeced.

What to do: If you see anything of value on the ground, keep walking. Don't check for your wallet or showcase where you keep yours.

Fake calls from the hotel front desk, take-out menus slipped under your door, or official looking room inspectors can easily fool kids and adults. All these ploys are designed to get access or information, so your cash, your valuables or even your identity can be stolen (think PIN numbers and passports).

What to do: Tell kids to never answer the phone or the door. Visit the front desk in person if you receive a call to verify your credit card information. Don't order from menus that aren't already present in your room when you arrive.
