Mattress Matters

A good mattress is the foundation for a great night's sleep, and essential for overall heath. And since we spend roughly one-third of our lives sleeping, knowing how to purchase a mattress makes sense. Here's what you need to know:

8 to 10 years is the lifespan for most mattresses. So if you start to notice springs or lumps, feel like you're sleeping in a divot, or begin waking with inexplicable body aches, you know it's time for a replacement.

Do some research. While lower-priced innerspring mattresses can offer a good night's sleep, they tend to be less durable over time. More expensive brands usually last longer and often come with a better warranty. However, selecting the mattress that's most comfortable for you is the real key. Just remember ...

Comfort is subjective. So at the mattress store you should spend about five minutes in each of your usual sleeping positions on different styles of mattresses. If you and your partner don't agree on the firmness, consider a "dual support" system, which creates different firmness zones via adjustable air chambers.

Negotiate discounts or extras like bed frames, pillows and sheets to be thrown in along with your purchase. You should never have to pay "full retail" at most stores, especially at stores that specialize in beds.

Flip and rotate at least four times per year, or according to the manufacturer's instructions, to keep your mattress in top condition by preventing damage to springs and uneven spots.

Check old linens to make sure they will be the same depth as your new bed. Buying all new sheets can substantially increase your costs!

Last but not least, make sure to verify the manufacturer's warranty in case the mattress is defective. Also, double check store return policies in case you want to exchange the mattress for a more comfortable bed. Thirty days should be more than enough time to evaluate whether or not you're getting a better night's sleep.
