Do What You Love ... for a Living
It's a question we hear from a young age. Some of us are just born knowing, while the rest of us are still trying to figure it out. Since much of our days are spent working, it's important to find a career you can be passionate about. Here are a few tips to help you follow your heart to success and find a job you'll love: Pinpoint your passion. If you could do any job in the world, what would it be? If the answer doesn't come to you immediately, another method for discovering your passion is to sit down and make a list of activities that come easily to you, that you daydream about, or that put you "in the zone" because you enjoy them so much. There are many creativity exercises and tests you can take to help you discover your abilities and passions, so you can perform the most important step: taking action! Job or hobby? If you want your passion to be more than just a hobby, but you're not the entrepreneurial type, finding a job at a company related to your passion is a lot easier than starting your own. Once you pinpoint your passions, list some careers that each one might fit. Or better yet, try to find several that overlap. Also consider the type of people you wish to work with, and the environment you want to be in every day. For example, if you love music you might explore working in a music store, teaching music or joining an ensemble that plays for events. If you like sports, but you're better at spreadsheets than scrimmaging, sports teams need accounting services too! The main point is that there are lots of jobs that surround activities you're passionate about. Knowledge is power. If you are thinking of making a career change, consider taking a class or getting professional instruction on the industry. Get involved in civic or professional organizations that align with your intended career move. Attending events or seminars can boost both your knowledge and your network. Stay on track. Begin to surround yourself with people who support you and your vision. Enlist a mentor who has already accomplished what you wish to achieve to help you navigate setbacks you'd otherwise have to negotiate on your own. The right people in your corner will keep your morale strong in the face of those inevitable hiccups. In the end, the only way to make sure you keep moving in the right direction is to set your progress to a timetable, put your plan to a schedule, and give yourself deadlines. Following your heart while earning a living is not impossible, but it will take dedication and, most of all, action. Sources: Business News Daily, SUCCESS | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
