Got Heartburn?

Got Heartburn?

Those of us who suffer from heartburn know how miserable an experience it can be. Heartburn happens when acid from the stomach makes its way into the esophagus.

Over 60 million Americans experience heartburn at least once a month. And more than 92 percent of heartburn sufferers say that food is the primary culprit.

That's good news because it means most of us can do something about it by simply adjusting eating habits! Below are some common heartburn triggers and tips to help avoid the burn.

Intestinal triggers vary from person to person, but you might want to watch out for:
  • Meats like ground beef, marbled sirloin, chicken tenders and wings
  • Fatty or oily foods like potato chips, French fries and even oily salad dressings
  • Sweets including chocolate, doughnuts and high-fat cookies
  • Fruits and vegetables like lemons, tomatoes and raw onions
  • Beverages like liquor, wine, coffee, tea and citrus drinks like orange juice or lemonade
  • Dairy including sour cream, ice cream and cottage cheese (yogurts and cheese sometimes are okay due to the fermentation and live bacteria, which helps some people to digest)
  • Spicy foods containing jalapeños, mustard and other hot sauces
Journal the burn. Understanding what foods affect you is a highly personal process since each person digests food differently. Start tracking what you eat and how your body responds. Use a notebook or journal, a spreadsheet, or a food tracker app like Food4GERD, available for iPhone, iPad and Android devices.

Keep portion size in check. Eating a large meal can overload your digestive tract. Consume smaller portions, so your system has time to digest. (In other words, give yourself some time before devouring that slice of pumpkin pie during the holidays!)

Being aware of what you eat can make a big impact on your overall health. As always, if you're considering changing your diet or exercise program, make sure to check with your doctor.
