The Lowdown on Advice

The Lowdown on Advice

Giving advice can be tricky, especially when it could have a long-term impact on someone else's life. Of course, the best advice for giving advice is to wait until you're asked.

But once you're asked, here are a few things you will want to consider before you reply:

Boost confidence. Listen and determine if the person is seeking advice or just needs someone to listen. Help him think a problem through, trust his own intuition and his ability to make a choice that's right for him. Ask the person what he feels is the best course of action and his reasons for thinking so. Your support may actually be all he needs to boost his confidence.

Assess your expertise. If you have the relevant expertise, offer information about various options and resources that can empower the person seeking advice. If you don't, it's best to steer clear. Simply state, "I'm not the best resource to answer that question." If you can recommend someone who is better equipped to advise, do so. Or offer to listen and be a sounding board for the person as noted above.

Don't attach to the outcome. Advice, once given, is best left alone. Expressing dismay over someone not following your advice is a mistake that could harm a relationship. Avoid saying "you should have" and "I told you so."

When asked for advice, don't think you need to have all the answers. Sometimes just being there to listen, asking thought-provoking questions, or recommending other resources for consideration is the best course of action.
