Mason Jar Jamboree

Mason Jar Jamboree

While mason jars have been used historically for storing and preserving food and other perishables, we have a few more exciting ideas to add to the list!

Do-it-yourself snack packs are a fantastic way to save money and eat healthy. Here's how one DIYer added an empty fruit cup to the top of a wide-mouth mason jar to make a variety of transportable snacks.

Stylish sewing kits for quick stitches and garment repairs. This little project even helps you devise a built-in pincushion on the top of the jar.

Centerpieces for weddings, showers and even the kitchen table are an easy way to add rustic elegance to your space. A little paint, ribbon and some fresh cut flowers will do the trick. Check out Pinterest for a little "pinspiration."

Vinegar and vanilla extract can be created and stored easily. Make your own vinegar with these simple tips or enhance store-bought varieties with herbs and other ingredients. This flavorful vanilla extract recipe will take a few months to age in your jar but is well worth the wait.

Grow your own sprout seeds for use in salads, sandwiches and other recipes calling for sprouted veggies.

Sourdough starters can be stored in mason jars until you need them. Try more than one starter recipe and see if you can taste the difference.

Decorative terrariums are perfect for all kinds of spaces and a fun project for all ages. Start with a layer of pebbles followed by a thin layer of charcoal to filter water and absorb odors. Top with a few inches of potting soil. With chopsticks or a skewer, add some moss. Then decorate with small plants, plastic animals, stones, crystals or any look desired. Water every few weeks.

Potpourri blends of flowers and botanicals are simple enough to dry and customize. Give as an original homemade gift in beautifully decorated jars.
