Cook up some fun. Take a trip to a nearby orchard and pick a haul of apples. Bake them into apple pies or spiced apples. Homemade soups are another cool-weather favorite, and everyone can lend a hand with prep work. Start a family book club. Cozy up by the fire and take turns reading aloud or let one person be the storyteller for a favorite book. Many family books appeal to a wide range of age groups. Choose books with a movie version and discuss the differences. Store a time capsule. Preserve family memories and special moments to enjoy five, 10 or 25 years in the future. Take an archival box and fill it with artwork, school reports, movie stubs, photos, old toys and a summary of what is happening with each family member. Have children include a Thanksgiving message about what they are thankful for this year. And, don't forget to write letters to your future selves. Rather than burying the time capsule, store it in a cool, dry place and include a silica gel packet to keep moisture out. Build a nature book. Head outdoors with a camera and basket so kids can collect items for each page of their nature journal. Back inside, help them print their photos to paste on each page, along with any treasures they found on the search. Have them complete this activity every season so they can compare the difference of scenery and the items they find. Select a scavenger hunt. These can be great indoors or out and even at locations like a shopping mall. For younger children, try a color hunt, where they write down the items they find and then draw a picture of each one. For older children, an alphabet search to find items for each letter can provide a fun challenge. Set a time limit and offer prizes for the winners. Take a night walk. Flashlights and headlamps are memorable gear for children. Make safety a priority with warm, bright-colored clothes and walking shoes before hitting the neighborhood.
