Try Something New in the New Year

Try Something New in the New Year

A few years ago, former Google engineer Matt Cutts was feeling stuck in a rut. Inspired by humorist and documentarian Morgan Spurlock (best known for his film "Super Size Me"), Cutts decided to try something new. His goal was to choose something he had always wanted to do and do it for 30 days straight.

Below are a few takeaways from Cutts' popular TED Talk about his experience.

The possibilities are endless. Want to try photography? Take a picture every day. Want to learn to knit or crochet? Work on a scarf every day. Want to write a novel? Plan to be a part of National Novel Writing Month. Anything new (big or small) that makes you re-examine long-held opinions or beliefs can make for an unforgettable experience.

Don't worry about planning ahead. Toward the end of each month, start thinking about another new venture you'd like to try the following month. You don't have to think of an entire year's worth of items ahead of time.

Stay on track. Get a calendar and a marker and place an X or a star each day after you've accomplished your goal. When you get a streak going, you'll want to keep it up!

Expect extras. The main benefit of trying something new is, of course, discovering things that appeal to you. Cutts, however, says he experienced some surprising side-benefits too, like more focus, more memory retention and more natural self-confidence, which translated to confidence in other areas of his life.

Why 30 days? While research is mixed on how long it takes to make a habit, the reality is, committing to 30 days is an easy time period to track. Base your start dates on the first of each month, get ready and go for it.

Plan now for how you will kick off the New Year trying something new.
