Rebranding for a Job Change
Get educated. Look at the job descriptions for the role you want. If you don't have enough recent experience, take a class or become certified. Sites like Skillshare and Udemy are good places to start, as well as local or community colleges in your area. Once you have the skill set, volunteer for projects outside your core work that draw on new skills, so you can resist being pigeon-holed at your current functional level. Use social media to develop a network of contacts and demonstrate your investment in your new path. Follow thought leaders in your target industry and join relevant industry groups and associations. Make sure to interact and comment, get to know other members, share interesting articles and attend industry conferences. Spread the word to your current contacts that you're serious about a job change; they may be able to help. Refresh your resume. Adjust previous work experience to highlight the skills hiring managers are seeking. Even if you don't think you have any experience, once you dig past the surface, you can usually discover relevant transferrable skills. Start by listing every job function you've ever performed, work projects and achievements, and volunteer experiences. Then, write what skills made you a successful contributor to each one. Add to your resume and highlight them in your LinkedIn profile. Be the solution. In job interviews, ask about the challenges the company or department is currently facing. Share ideas on how you might be able to resolve those difficulties and how the achievements from your background align with what the hiring manager is looking for in the role. Acting the part is particularly useful if you want to advance in your own company. Make sure you understand not just where your company is headed, but your industry too. These tips will help ensure your rebranding efforts are believable in the marketplace and increase your chances of hearing, "You're hired!"
