How Your Smartwatch Can Help You Sleep

How Your Smartwatch Can Help You Sleep

Did you know that your smartwatch can help you sleep better? Sleep tracking is a key feature that's quickly gained popularity among smartwatch wearers, but how does the technology work? And is sleep tracking accurate enough to invest in a smartwatch for those who don't have one?

Smartwatches track sleep habits thanks to a form of modern technology called actigraphy, a noninvasive method of monitoring a person's activity and rest cycles. When you wear a smartwatch, its tri-axis accelerometer monitors your movements 24 hours a day, allowing it to tell when you're awake or asleep.

While the smartwatch can gather valuable information related to your sleep cycle, it can't measure eye movement, brain waves, or breathing, so don't expect it to provide information on your REM sleep vs. fitful sleep. Even so, wearing a smartwatch can give you a better idea of your sleep habits and whether you're getting a good amount of rest each night.

Overall, smartwatches are very accurate when it comes to tracking sleep. According to a 2015 study, a fitness tracker, which uses the same technology as a smartwatch, proved accurate in measuring nighttime sleep compared to traditional sleep study methods.

Smartwatches aren't meant to take the place of medical devices. You will still need to consult a doctor and not an app if you're experiencing sleep-related issues.

A smartwatch can help you sleep in several ways. Wearing one while at rest can help you pay more attention to your sleep habits and even encourage you to go to bed at a reasonable hour each night. Smartwatches can also serve as silent alarms, gently waking you with a quiet vibration.

Whether you're dealing with ongoing sleep issues or simply want to gather data on your sleep habits, smartwatch technology can help you get a restful night of sleep.
