Have Your Home Zoned to Increase Comfort

If you observe that your home's temperature is uneven and your energy bills keep rising, try HVAC zoning. So, what is HVAC zoning, and how does it benefit you and your family?

With traditional HVAC systems, the conditioned air gets delivered throughout the entire house via the ducting. No matter what level the rooms are on, or whether anyone is using them, the same temperature air is supplied to those rooms. Because the main thermostat that controls the temperature of your home is generally on the main level, that living space is usually comfortable while the upper levels are often too hot and the lower levels too cold.

With a zoning system, you can address this irregularity, as the HVAC contractor installs dampers throughout the ductwork, which open and close as needed. Each room, or zone, has its own thermostat and is pre-set to the desired temperature. When the room reaches the set temperature, the thermostat signals the control panel to shut the dampers so that the conditioned air no longer enters the room. Once the temperature in the zone changes, the dampers open once again so that the warm or cool air flows into the room.

If you have a vacant area, like a guest room, you can set the temperature at a higher or lower level until someone moves in there and readjusts the temperature according to their needs. Also, if someone living in the house likes their room at a different temperature than everyone else's, they can program their own thermostat to their preferred temperature.

HVAC zoning will prevent you from overheating (or overcooling) certain areas in your home, saving you money on your energy bills. Besides, your HVAC system will last longer, as it will no longer work so hard to deliver warm or cool air.

Increase the comfort level in your home and save money by having your home zoned.
