Overcoming Imposter Syndrome
Do you ever feel as though you don't deserve the success and accomplishments you've achieved? Are you just waiting for the entire world to discover you're a fraud? Then you may suffer from what's known as imposter syndrome, or an unwarranted sense of insecurity. If you battle it in your professional life, the following tips can help you overcome it: Talk about how you're feeling: The shame you feel from thinking you're an imposter might keep you from talking about how you feel. However, if you open up to others and discuss these feelings, you can identify them and start to move past them. Additionally, if you talk about how you feel with a trusted friend or mentor who has gone through the same thing, they might be able to provide some guidance. Retrain your thinking: Instead of telling yourself that other people are going to realize that you don't belong and you don't deserve your success, retrain your mind to accept that you're right where you should be. When your mind starts thinking, "Wait until all of these people realize I have no idea what I'm doing," think to yourself, "I might not know all of the answers, but I know I'm smart enough to figure them out." Change your rules: If you believe you should always know the answer to every question or you can never ask for help, it's time to change your rules. Instead, remind yourself that you don't have to know everything and you can always learn as you go. Also, keep in mind that it's perfectly human to be wrong, ask for assistance, or have an off day. Change how you think about failure: Everyone will experience failure in their life. Rather than look at failure as falling short or a validation of your negative feelings, reframe it as a way to learn a lesson. Failures provide opportunities to improve. Try using these tips to help you overcome imposter syndrome in your professional life and take pride in your success. Source: HBR.org | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
