Apps to Access Your Local Library

Did you know that you don't need to purchase books or movies from your favorite digital platform? Most likely, your local library has access to several apps that allow you to read e-books, listen to audiobooks, and watch movies for free. All you need is a valid library card and an internet connection to get started. This is just a sampling of the different apps available but check with your library first to determine which apps it offers.

Hoopla Digital. With a collection of more than 500,000 e-books, comics, music, and audiobooks, Hoopla Digital works with libraries in the United States and Canada. A perk of this platform is that you only need this one app to access digital content in any of the formats.

Kanopy. This app allows you to watch up to 10 films a month on your mobile device, Roku, Apple TV, or Fire TV. You have access to more than 300,000 films, including foreign films, documentaries, Hollywood classics, and indie films.

Libby. This is an excellent app if you're new to reading e-books thanks to its user-friendly interface. You can sign up with numerous library cards, so if you have one from a school and another from your community, you can borrow from both.

OverDrive. Perhaps the most popular platform that libraries use, OverDrive works with more than 40,000 libraries to lend e-books and audiobooks. The titles you borrow are returned to the library automatically, so you won't incur any late fines.

SimplyE Library Reader. This app is part of a partnership with the Library Simplified platform, which uses the New York Public Library as its lead. Once you log in, you have access to more than 300,000 e-books and audiobooks. Even if you don't have a card with a participating library, you can read thousands of free public domain e-books, thanks to Project Gutenberg.
