Etiquette for Announcing Your New Home

Etiquette for Announcing Your New Home

It's an exciting time when you purchase a home, and you probably want to share the news with all your friends and family. There's a saying that one person's good news could be another person's reason to be sad. Some people might feel envious that you've been able to purchase your dream home while they're still living with several roommates in an apartment. The big question becomes: how can you tell your friends about your wonderful news without alienating them?

Do take pictures. Make sure you capture a few highlights of your new place, whether it's how great the kitchen looks, the awesome views out the windows, or the stunning bedroom. You can also step it up a notch and create a video tour.

Don't brag. Humble brags have become more popular due to social media. It's okay to share your accomplishments, but be honest about it. Avoid commenting that you can't believe you lived in an apartment for so long, especially if you have friends still living this way.

Do be relatable. Is there a funny story about your home-buying process? Did it take an extremely long time to find out if you got the house? Or was the home only on the market for a day or two? These aren't humble brags, but they might make your entire experience a bit more relatable and others might feel less jealous to know that it wasn't a smooth-sailing process.

Don't immediately ask everyone for help. As you know, homeownership can come with a ton of responsibility. However, now's not the time to hit up every friend for help just to cut a few corners. Sure, you can ask for assistance in moving in, and maybe you want to get started on a few home improvement projects. Just remember that your friends might have other things to do besides helping you every step of the way.

It's natural to worry about what others might think, but remember that this is a momentous time in your life and you should celebrate this achievement. Just try to do so without overly bragging about what you have and they don't. Feel free to be happy about this new phase in your life and get started planning your housewarming party.
