How Setting Boundaries Helps You

How Setting Boundaries Helps You

Do you ever find yourself completely overwhelmed and not in control of certain situations in your professional life? If so, you might want to consider implementing boundaries. Doing so can increase your sense of control and reduce your stress.

What exactly is a boundary, and why is it important? Simply put, a boundary is a limit that defines the relationship you have between someone or something. It can be physical and tangible or emotional and intangible.

You've probably already instilled boundaries with others without even knowing it. For instance, if you've ever told someone that you draw the line at a certain point, that's a boundary. You have informed that person that you will not bend regarding that certain situation or object. To help you set boundaries, you must adhere to the following:

  • Set limits: Be clear about what your limits are. Pay attention to yourself, and determine what you can tolerate as well as what makes you uncomfortable and stressed. Remember that your limits are yours alone and are likely to be different than the limits others have.
  • Value your time: Your time is extremely valuable, so it's important to stay on task. Check your email a few times an hour instead of having it immediately notify you. Say "no" to certain requests if they do not fulfill your overall goals. Try to end meetings at the time stated instead of letting them run over.
  • Conserve your energy: Give yourself a break when needed. It's entirely fine to step away from your computer for a little bit if needed. Successful people recognize that they have times when their actions aren't productive. Tell yourself to stop so you can conserve your energy for areas that matter.
  • Stop feeling guilty: Perhaps one of the biggest impeding factors in setting boundaries is the feeling of fear and guilt. You might worry about how someone will respond if you set and enforce boundaries or how someone will feel if you turn them down. You might feel like you should say "yes" because that's what a good coworker or employee would do, but then you end up overwhelmed and aggravated. When these doubts arise, remind yourself that you have the right to set boundaries, and permit yourself to do so.

Setting boundaries can be a healthy option whenever you feel completely frustrated with your professional life. It takes some time and discipline to set boundaries, but investing in yourself is as important as investing in your work. You'll be a much more productive worker and have more mental space to give back.
