Flu Season Has Arrived! Last year, this ounce of prevention was dealt a fatal blow as one of the companies responsible for producing flu vaccines, Chiron Corporation, experienced extensive plant problems. As a result, the Food and Drug Administration blocked their vaccine from release within the U.S. This prompted a great deal of concern among the general population, as people tried to protect themselves not only from the flu, but also the potential complications it can bring about in those who contract it. So, how many people are affected by the flu? The Centers for Disease Control recommends vaccinations for anyone who falls within the following parameters: While the flu shot is beneficial, especially to those at higher risk, not everyone who wants a shot will be able to obtain one. There are other preventative steps that you can take to protect yourself, however, and many of them just require a little extra thought on your part! Keep your hands off your face. Germs are most easily transmitted when a person touches a contaminated item and then touches their nose, mouth, or eyes. Listen to your mother and wash your hands. Washing your hands or using an anti-bacterial lotion can help to protect you from germs. OK, put your hands over your face! When coughing and sneezing, be mindful of those around you, and cover your mouth or nose with a tissue. Stay home when you're ill. If you are sick, this is one time when it's best not to go into work. At the very least, your performance will be compromised. In addition, no one else wants to get sick or take your germs home to their loved ones. Observe everyone's personal space. When someone is sick, whether it's you or those around you, it's best to keep your distance. Give your liver a holiday. The liver is your body's primary germ defender. Don't tax it during the flu season by making it work overtime because of excess alcohol consumption. Quit Smoking. Cilia in your nose work to collect the germs that could make you sick. Smoking can put them out of commission, opening your body up to all sorts of germs. Fortunately, it's still early in the flu season, and there haven't been any major outbreaks reported. If you would like to get a flu shot, there's still time. For a list of places near you that are providing vaccinations, visit www.flucliniclocator.org. (Just enter your zip code and dates when you're available, and it will take care of the rest!) In addition, if you're planning to travel or are just curious about other parts of the country, you may want to visit the flu map at www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/usmap.htm. It will show you which states are reporting outbreaks and the degree to which they're being impacted. | |||
