The Dog Days of Summer: - Bring Out the Best in You & Your Canine

The editorial staff at YOU Magazine has always taken great pride in our articles pertaining to family. But after publishing editorials on swimming pool safety and other weighty topics, we realized that we’ve completely overlooked one of the most essential components of many American households. We’re talking about the beloved family dog.

In an effort to gain expert advice, we sent field correspondent, Stephanie Clark, to UrbanTails, a pet supply store and training center located in Los Angeles, California. Co-owner and trainer extraordinaire, Zack Grey, talked with Stephanie and shared plenty of great information. To see her interview, as well as Zack’s amazing demonstration of how to train a puppy, be sure to click on the video attached to this article.

A Little About Zack Grey… and UrbanTails
Zack Grey is someone you would consider a “jack-of-all-trades.” With skills as a chef, a designer, a dancer, and a graphic artist, it’s no wonder he’s a regular Dr. Doolittle when it comes to dogs. But Zack’s ability as a trainer is a gift he discovered somewhat by accident.

It was roughly a decade ago when, as Zack puts it, “I realized I had a lot of different skills but no resume to show for them.” He had spent the previous 16 years pursuing another one of his talents – dancing. But after nearly two decades of performing in front of live audiences around the world, he was ready for a more sedentary life.

Setting up shop in southern California, Zack put an ad in the Los Angeles Times, promoting himself as a personal assistant with an eclectic array of talents. The owner of a pet store chain quickly hired him and the journey began.

While working for the storeowner, Zack befriended one of the store’s customers, a dog trainer with a large celebrity clientele. He eventually went to work for the trainer, organizing her business and personal life. While doing so, Zack began learning the tricks of the trade. According to Grey,  “It was a combination of learning through osmosis, actual hands-on work with the animals, and a lifelong affection for dogs.”

During his tenure, Zack became so adept at dealing with dogs (and their owners) that the trainer enlisted his help in running her group classes. Over the course of time, he acquired his own clientele and eventually turned this newfound skill into his own business in 2003.

Fast-forward 4 years to June 2007. Zack, along with his assistant turned business partner, Karina Martin, have recently opened UrbanTails Los Angeles, a comprehensive retail pet store and training center located along a bustling L.A. street known as Beverly Boulevard.

Upon entering the store, the feel is more that of a sizeable, trendy boutique than a pet center. Complete with koi pond and running fountain, UrbanTails is a true experience for any pet lover. From premium quality pet foods to everyday essentials and various luxury items, the store has something for almost any pet owner.

Another feature that sets UrbanTails apart from other stores is its complete line of eco-friendly products. Zack and Karina have actually dedicated an entire section of their store to items such as plush dog beds (as well as countless other pet essentials) made from 100% recycled materials.

And, of course, there’s the obedience training. At UrbanTails, pet owners can choose from 3 different options depending on their need; group classes, private lessons and online training. Regardless of which one you choose, each program helps you to teach your pet through positive reinforcement and motivational training.

When asked what makes his classes different from his competitors, Grey replied, “My delivery.” He says aside from his skills as a trainer, his number one ability is to inspire people to follow through with their dog’s training. Dogs are pack animals, and, according to Zack, they are in desperate need of guidance. By doing your part as an owner, your dog will see you as the leader and the provider. He says your ultimate reward is a happier dog and an even happier you.

UrbanTails is located at 7515 Beverly Boulevard in Los Angeles. For more information about UrbanTails, Los Angeles or Zack’s dog obedience training, call the store at (323) 933-2100, or log on to www.urbantails.net.

YOU Magazine would like to welcome field correspondent, Stephanie Clark, to the team. Stephanie is a graduate of Arizona State University where she was named Miss Scottsdale for 2003. She is currently making her bid for Miss California, USA 2008.
