Tis' the Season to Give - Not Just Receive

The holidays are in full swing and with all the hustle and bustle that this season brings, it's easy to get distracted from the true spirit of the holidays. Winston Churchill said, "You make a living by what you get, but you make a life by what you give." This holiday season, why not spread a little cheer by gathering your family together for some giving–not just presents for loved ones, but by giving of your time or resources...or even yourself!

Here are just a few meaningful and practical ways that you and your family can give to others in need this holiday season:

Volunteer for your local Meals on Wheels Association of America. As the oldest and largest national organization "composed of and representing local, community-based Senior Nutrition Programs in all 50 U.S. states, as well as the U.S. Territories," MOWAA has over 5,000 local Senior Nutrition Programs in the United States. Visit MOWAA.org and insert your zip code where it says "Find a Meal" and then look to see whether your local center says "Needs Volunteers."

Serve a meal at a local Soup Kitchen or box some food for your local Food Pantry. FoodPantries.org enables you to find both local soup kitchens and food pantries. You will likely need to do some homework by calling the specific locations to find out what their specific needs are. You can also visit the Feeding America website for a complete listing of local food banks, listed by state and by zip code.

Pull a name from the angel or giving tree at your shopping mall. Most if not all area shopping malls typically have a designated "angel" or "giving" tree, which lists the names, ages and a few holiday wishes of needy children or families in your area. Simply pull a name from the tree, and then grab a few things that are on the list. Typically there is no wrapping required, as there are volunteers ready to take your gift and prepare it for giving.

Contact your local Ronald McDonald House Charities® and take them up on one of their volunteering options. Whether you prepare a meal for families, host a movie or pizza night, or assist with some landscaping, there are plenty of ways to help this renowned charity. Volunteers save RMH an estimated $40 million a year.

Support our military by writing a holiday greeting and sending it to Holiday Mail for Heroes.  Have each member of the family sit down and write out a personal message, whether in the form of a thank you or wishing our military well this holiday season. There are certain card guidelines to follow, and the deadline to make sure that the card makes it to troops in time is listed as December 7. But even if you miss the deadline this year, this is a great charity to remember for next year.

Bake some goodies and deliver them to your local fire department. Show your appreciation for the role that your local firefighters play in your community by baking up some goodies and dropping them by the station. This is a fun activity for kids any age!

Help a relative or neighbor in need. If you have an elderly relative or neighbor, consider a kind act of service for them like raking leaves, mowing their lawn, shoveling their walkway, or stopping by their home with a nice hot meal.

Remember, as Winston Churchill said, "You make a life by what you give." However you choose to give this holiday season, know that your family's time, compassion and efforts may just be the best gift that people receive this year.
