Summer Craft Project
A 'Secret' Paper Bag Book

Summer Craft Project - A 'Secret' Paper Bag Book

Here's an easy summertime activity that will keep kids of all ages entertained for hours.

Have your children ever wanted to write their own book? They can make it about anything: someplace they'd like to travel, where they went on vacation, their family or pets, make-believe stories about superheroes, or princesses, or magical lands far away where anything can happen! They can also use the book as a diary or an autograph book to take on a trip. The best part of all is that the book will have a secret pouch where they can keep treasures they find along the way, or to keep the ending of their story a secret from prying eyes!

For this project you will need the following items:

Paper lunchbags
Colored pens, pencils, and crayons
Scissors
Stapler and staples
Glue
Construction paper, any color (for book cover)
Cardstock paper, white
Single hole-punch (optional)
Ribbon (optional)

Here are the instructions to share with your children:

Step 1: Leaving two lunch bags flat, fold them in half width-wise to form the pages of your book. Make sure the openings of the bags face the outside, one at each end (you'll be using them later on!). Staple together down the centers of the inside fold.

Step 2: Cut out two pieces of cover paper to fit the outside of your book and six pieces of thinner card stock to use as the inside of your pages. Don't glue them in quite yet.

Step 3: With pens, pencils, and crayons write and draw your story on the card stock before you glue them in–this way, if you want to change something about your story or correct your spelling, your book stays neat and clean. After your story is finished, work on your front and back cover, and make sure to give yourself credit.

Step 4: Double check the pages are in the right order and carefully glue your pages and covers onto the paper bags. Remember, you're gluing paper, so a little glue goes a long way. Afterwards, set something heavy on top of your book so it will dry flat.

Step 5: If you want to add ribbon to the spine of your book, punch two holes along the spine and thread it through.
