Low Cost Road-trips

Low Cost Road-trips

Taking a vacation doesn't have to be expensive. Most cities in the U.S. are within a day's drive to any number of museums, monuments, battlefields, military and historical sites, lakes, oceans, recreation areas or the many scenic rivers and trails making up our extensive National Park system. Many of these destinations host fun events of all kinds and for all ages, often at no charge.
  • American Alliance of Museums helps you
quickly locate museums by name, city, state and museum type.
  • National Park Foundation has sections for exploring the park system and
planning trips. Get up-to-date information and notifications of events and activities
by signing up for your free "Owner's Guide" and newsletter via email. Campsites can be had for as little as $20. Don't forget to check your local state parks and recreation systems, too!
  • About.com lists state and regional fairs along with opening and closing dates. Fairs are an inexpensive way to turn your road trip into an amusing and enjoyable trip.
  • Rodeoz lists upcoming local rodeos, helping you find them with a nearby zip code.
And for even more ways to save:

Eating meals on the road can get expensive, so pack sandwiches, snacks and drinks to avoid those fast food temptations on the way. If you prefer to eat prepared meals, check Groupon, Restaurant.com and Gift Card Granny for deals, discount cards and offers in towns you'll be passing through along the way.

Purchase camping food at a supermarket or big-box store and store it in a cooler. Any meal you can make at home, you can make camping with inexpensive propane fueled camp stoves, ovens and barbecue grills. Unless you have experience, avoid cooking over campfires—aside from s'mores, of course—since temperatures are harder to control.

Save on gas expenses with GasBuddy, which uses GPS tracking systems to locate the cheapest gas prices near your location. Spend money on rewards or "cash back" credit cards, or buy pre-discounted gift cards for gas stations at Cardpool and CardCash. You can also look for discounted gift cards through Walmart, Fred Meyer or any grocery stores with their own gas stations.
