High-energy Snacks to Refuel Your Workday

High-energy Snacks to Refuel Your Workday

The workday can get pretty hectic—so much so that many of us skip meals and reach for easy-access snacks from the vending machine or convenience store.

Unfortunately, these grab-and-go snacks are usually carb-loaded, causing energy levels to spike. And what goes up...must come down.

Sustain your energy throughout the day and avoid the crash with these 14 high-energy snacks that provide a balance of protein and carbohydrates:
  • Whole grain bagel with flavored cream cheese
  • Whole grain toast with peanut butter
  • Sliced hard-boiled egg with seasoning on a whole grain pita
  • Oatmeal with raisins
  • Hummus and veggies
  • Almonds, pistachios, peanuts or other favorite nuts and fruit
  • Popcorn (not the kind that's slathered in butter!)
  • Cottage cheese with fruit
  • Low-sodium jerky and fruit
  • Cheese and whole grain crackers—Mix it up with Muenster, smoked Gouda, or Havarti with dill.
  • Mini bean-and-cheese quesadillas—Fold 1/2 cup black beans, 1 tablespoon salsa and 1 slice cheddar cheese in a small flour tortilla. Cook in a dry nonstick pan until the cheese is melted and tortilla is lightly browned. Then wrap it in foil and pack it in a plastic baggie.
  • Roasted garbanzo beans or edamame with sea salt, curry or Cajun seasoning
  • Ants on a log (Remember this childhood favorite of celery, peanut butter and raisins?)
  • Roasted pumpkin seeds (Put those seeds to good use if you carve pumpkins this fall!)
If you plan ahead and pack these protein-rich snacks, you'll sustain your energy throughout the day, especially if you snack healthily every two to three hours.

One last piece of advice: Start the day strong. Don't ever skip breakfast. And share these tips with your family and friends.
