8 After-holiday Decorating Ideas

8 After-holiday Decorating Ideas

When the dust from the holiday chaos has settled and the festive decorations are put away, you may feel something's missing. Here are a few ideas to help inspire you now or any time of the year:

Mix things up. It's been said that good interior design comes from ruthless editing. This means you should take regular opportunities to change things aroundand what better time than the start of a new year? You may dislike what you come up with, or you may stumble on an arrangement that makes you fall in love with a room again. You don't have to treat the spaces in your home as if they are set in stone.

Play with space by re-hanging art in a different way, or box up your knick-knacks and objets d'art for circulation later on in the year. Create a rotating stockpile for the year, or just move furniture around by mixing and matching with the seasons.

Plants have the ability to liven up any room. You can also rotate plants throughout the house to make sure they are getting enough sunlight.

Add glitz and glam with silver or gold accents to easily ring in the New Year. White is another color easily accented with pops of your own favorite winter colors. Or go for a red theme with roses, antique lanterns, candles, glassware and other dcor. Leave this theme all the way through Valentine's Day, before transitioning into spring colors.

A little paint goes a long way so consider new colors for crown molding, base board or wainscoting. Choose colors to contrast with the outdoor weather, especially if you've had your fill of snow.

Group family photos on barren shelf space or side tables that could use a personal touchframes don't have to match, but should coordinate.

Collect heirlooms and antiques and set the tone for an entire room. Many items are inexpensive to purchase, but it's even better if you can add a family heirloom with a story.

Fill the air with fragrance that fits the mood you want to create. Often, those fresh scents are the first things that visitors notice. So consider lighting scented candles, purchasing plug-in air fresheners, or baking something yummy before company arrives.
