Ambience: The Subtle Secret to Productivity

Ambience: The Subtle Secret to Productivity

The Max Planck Society performed a study in 2014 confirming something most of us know instinctively: bad moods are contagious and often transmitted through stress. Interestingly, the institute found that for many, stress merely needs to be observed to be transmitted.

In office environments where people are required to be around each other for much of the day, stress can easily take over. The good news is, focusing on your ambient environment can help lower stress points and encourage peaceful productivity. And the best part is, once you've "set it up" for success, you no longer have to think about it.

Here are five easy, subtle ways to create a happier, more productive office environment:

Living plants can actually help you concentrate, according to research. Plus, plants help purify stale air and create a warmer, more welcoming feel for anyone who comes into your space, from co-workers to clients.

Proper lighting affects everything from well-being and mood, to energy, alertness and productivity. Poor lighting can contribute to fatigue, eyestrain, headaches and even depression. If you can't get natural light into your workspace, try incorporating full-spectrum bulbs in your lighting, which reproduce the light-spectrum of sunlight. They are available from any hardware store for any type of overhead lighting.

Healthy snacks like fruits, vegetables and nuts provide brain food to improve your mood and boost productivity. If you rely on sugary snacks for a quick mood boost, you may wind up in a blood sugar free-fall. Highly processed sugars in candy release energy much too quickly, negatively affecting blood sugar levels, concentration and self-control.

Background music can be relaxing and help concentration ... so long as the listener enjoys the style of music. Try testing the hypothesis out on yourself.

Visual reminders about the good things in your life can help you feel like you're taking a little bit of home to work each day, remind you about "why" you do what you do, as well as be a positive influence on others. These can include pictures of loved ones, your goals and favorite motivational inscriptions. Avoid overtly controversial statements or images.

While there's no such thing as the perfect office environment, small individual efforts can help turn your office into a happier, healthier place to work.
