8 Prostate Cancer Preventatives Here are eight tips for lowering your chances (or that of a loved one) of getting prostate cancer: Five servings of fruit and vegetables per day are at the heart of most doctor and dietician recommendations for a balanced diet. Studies also show men who consume lycopene-rich foods like tomatoes, watermelon and other red-colored foods have a lower risk of prostate cancer. Opt for whole grains when you eat bread, pasta and cereals, which have a higher fiber content. Choose the right protein. Sources like beef, pork, lamb, goat and processed meats like bologna and hot dogs come with a price tag: higher saturated fat. Opt for fish, skinless poultry, beans, eggs and even tofu to get your protein. Replace animal-based fats. While there's nothing wrong with small amounts, try to limit your fat intake from animal sources like dairy and cheese. There's plenty of healthy fat in olive oil, nuts and avocados. Partially hydrogenated fats (and trans fats) found in packaged foods and fast foods should be avoided. Sugar and salt make things taste good, no doubt. Natural sugars such as those found in fruit are perfectly healthy, but refined sugars, fruit juice and soda all lack dietary fiber, creating a heavy glycemic toll. Salt is snuck into lots of food items. Low-sodium options or food made from scratch without salt can help control salt content. Boil your brew. Your coffee habit can help lower your chances of high-grade prostate cancer. But to get the full benefits, you should boil your coffee (using a French press) and not prepare it with a filter. The cancer-fighting chemicals, cafestrol and kahweol, are trapped when coffee runs through a paper filter. A smoking habit is never too late to quit. Prostate cancer patients who quit smoking for more than 10 years had the same mortality risk as those who never smoked. Get regular exercise. Too much fat around the middle of your body is linked to an increased risk of prostate cancer. Low- to moderate-intensity physical activity, such as walking at a moderate pace from one to three hours per week, will give you some benefits. Brisk walking or non-aerobic exercises such as leg lifts, sit-ups and stretching three times per week will help you get in great condition. And remember to get regular check-ups, especially after age 50 as risk increases. Sources: Harvard Medical School, Healthline, CDC | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
