Sleep Patterns of the Successful

A good night's sleep can put you on the path to success. But sometimes that's easier said than done. Here are a few good habits to adopt if you want to improve your sleep patterns and wake up feeling refreshed.
  • Only use your bed for sleeping. It may be tempting to work in bed on a rainy day or to eat in bed while you watch TV after work, but this can make it harder to fall asleep. Your brain will associate the space with food and entertainment. Instead, only climb into bed when you are ready to sleep, and your body will respond appropriately.

  • Develop a nightly ritual. Create nightly cues that tell your body it is time for bed. These can be as simple as taking a shower, brushing your teeth, and setting your alarm. Everyone's routine is different. Going through this process every night will prime your body to fall asleep, even if you're not tired yet.

  • Try to stick to a schedule. If you fall asleep at different times each night, then your body won't know whether it should stay up or wind down. Try to go to sleep close to the same time every night—at least on weeknights—so your body will get tired when bedtime approaches.

  • Turn off your digital devices. The lights from your phone and TV screens are actually meant to wake you up, so playing on your phone before bed or falling asleep with the TV on can actually make it harder for you to doze off. Instead, put the screens down and pick up a book or magazine before you go to bed.
As you make these changes, take note of how your body responds. You should have higher energy levels and better focus throughout the day.
