Setting Up Screen Time Limits in Your Home

Setting Up Screen Time Limits in Your Home

Screen time is a discussion that most modern parents have had with their children or fellow parents. Although we still don't know exactly how screen time impacts the developing brains of young children, most parents can attest to the challenge that is shutting off the screens for mealtimes, homework, and other necessary tasks. Reports show that parents are concerned about how much time their kids spend using digital media, no matter how old or young their kids may be.

Setting up screen time limits starts with you. If you're constantly on your phone, tablet, or other device, it's going to be harder to tell your kids to put their screens away. Discuss how to balance the screens with other responsibilities and tasks, with a focus on everyone in the family. You can lead the discussion with an emphasis on balancing everything, not just screens. If someone was playing sports for eight hours a day, they wouldn't have much balance in their life either.

Develop a schedule for screen time that provides routine and consistency. You might allow your kids to watch for 30 minutes while you prepare dinner each night. A chip or token system might work better if your kids are busy with activities at different times during the day. You can also use apps to time how long a screen has been in use and even automatically shut it down at the end of the scheduled screen time. Some internet providers offer a way to shut down the home's Wi-Fi connection during mealtimes or other family-focused times.

Limiting screen time isn't easy, but it's something that is worth considering if you're concerned about the impact of screens on your developing children. By keeping the discussion open and ensuring consistency, you can potentially avoid the constant, daily battle of the screens.
