Tips on Creating a Sustainable Lawn

Tips on Creating a Sustainable Lawn

Having a lawn has many rewards. The kids and dogs can play on it, it has a cooling effect around your house, and it can add value to your home. However, many lawns use chemical fertilizers and toxic pesticides and require an enormous amount of water. In fact, a study by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), found that nearly 50% of water consumption comes from watering lawns during the summer months.

So how can you have a lawn that's lush, green, and beautiful without using chemicals and wasting water? Here are a few tips.
  • The right type of grass. The most common type of grass for lawns is Kentucky bluegrass. However, it needs a lot of water. Look for grass seeds that come from fescues, rye, or buffalo grass that need less water to thrive.

  • Healthy soil. Soil that is rich in microbial activity feeds the roots of the grass so it stays strong and healthy. Feed your lawn homemade compost or purchase organic turf builder.

  • Don't cut the grass short. When the grass is very short, the roots dry out much quicker and you need to water it more. Also, when the grass is higher, the roots can stay healthy enough to fend off pests and disease.

  • Use a manual push mower. Gas-powered lawn mowers use fossil fuels and spew out fumes that can add to air pollution. Instead of a gas mower, choose a modern, high-quality manual reel mower to cut the grass. Not only is this more sustainable, but you will also get some great exercise! A reel mower will snip the trimmings like scissors, leaving fine trimmings in place to help feed the soil.
Follow these suggestions to have a lovely lawn this summer that you feel good about growing.
