You can eat up a lot of time going to the gym. It's not just a matter of the time spent working out, but also how long it takes to get dressed, get there and back. If you feel a little pressed for time, but don't want your fitness to suffer, try this quick exercise–you'll work up a great sweat and there's no fancy equipment required!

First, a Word About Stress
The "more is better" approach to exercise is counter-productive, and many people who work out usually do so for too long. Exercise is stress; your body produces the stress-hormone cortisol after about 45 minutes of sustained stress of any kind. Cortisol causes fat retention.

The other side of the coin is that muscle only grows when it's resting. Without sufficient rest post-workout, you'll stall progress and harm your immune system. The solution is shorter, more effective workouts well under 45 minutes (under 20 is optimal) and at least eight hours of sleep (ten is even better).

The World's Best Single Exercise
Squat thrusts are familiar to anyone who's been in the armed services. Better known as burpees, they are a high-intensity, full-body exercise targeting every major muscle group. Easy to learn, but if you've never done them you'll want to start off slow.

Start with your hands in the air, then squat down placing both hands on the ground in front of you, kick your feet out so you're in a pushup position, then jump back into the squat, stand again and leap into the air with arms raised. Repeat for up to 60 seconds. Watch a beginner-level video demonstration here. If you want to kick it up a notch, add a pushup at the bottom of the rep.

Remember, when pressed for time, you don't need a gym to stay in shape. A quick search of body weight exercises will give you plenty of things to do in the comfort of your own home. Remember to check with your doctor before beginning any diet or exercise program and have fun!
