People aren't the only ones who enjoy a clean living environment. Animals like their living spaces spic-and-span as much as their humans. Here are eight cleaning and safety tips for pet owners to keep in mind as the weather warms:

Catty about cleaners: Ensure that chemicals in cleaning products are safe for your furry friends. Be especially careful with products containing bleach and ammonia, and consider pet-friendly alternatives.

Enforcing the No-Fido Zone: Keep curious pets (and kids!) away from areas you're cleaning. It is unsafe to allow them in cleaned vicinities until after each room is well ventilated and all surfaces have dried of cleaning agents.

Scents and sensibility: Humans have 5 million scent receptors, dogs have over 200 million. Your pets may not protest, but those scented detergents, cleaners and dryer sheets can irritate both their noses and their skin. Opt for unscented options whenever possible.

Pamper your pet: Make brushing your pet's fur a year-round habit. Consider a professional groomer for deep cleaning. And a haircut might be in order to keep our longer-haired friends cool during the warmer months.

Dog-park-ready physique: Pets can be less active in the winter, so take care in the spring with a vet checkup and by regulating outdoor activity. The goal is to have fun, but remember that pets can easily injure themselves if they don't work up to their workouts.

Fresh bedding: Wash pet beds regularly. Skip the scented detergent and dryer sheets.

From cruddy to cuddly: Most vets recommend cleaning crates and carriers once per week. Use warm soapy water (dishwashing detergent) or a very mild disinfectant. If disinfectant is required, make sure to rinse and air out the crate thoroughly before use.

Time fleas: Ask your family vet about the latest options for prevention to keep you, your family and your pets free from fleas, ticks and disease.
