Negotiating a Raise, Even Now

Negotiating a Raise, Even Now

Salary negotiations are never easy, but during a precarious economic environment when certain companies are scaling back to save every penny, you might feel like asking for more money is a risky move. You may worry that asking for a raise during this time can make you look insensitive to challenges faced by your employer, but there's no harm in asking for a raise as long as you're not pushy.

The economic environment shouldn't deter you completely. As long as you're conscious of the situation and arm yourself with these tips, it couldn't hurt to ask for that raise:

Do your research: If you believe you deserve more money, prove this to your employer by researching your salary against what the market is paying people with your responsibilities. Recognize the value you bring to the company and share your documentation and contributions.

Ask for what you want: Sometimes the toughest part of the negotiation is working up the courage to ask. Determine your worth and come to the table armed with your number. Set up a time to speak with your supervisor to discuss your compensation. The tone should be conversational, not confrontational.

Avoid threatening to leave: Be prepared that you might not get the exact number you want. Threatening to leave could cause your supervisor to be cautious about your intentions and not trust you in the long term.
