How If This Then That Can Integrate Your Smart Home Devices

It's no surprise that the internet has taken over most people's lives, and it's certainly evident in homes. Each home has an average of more than two dozen internet-connected devices, so it makes sense that these devices should work together to make your life a little easier. However, it's not always that easy since most homes are outfitted with smart devices made from different brands.

That's where If This Then That comes into play. This solution debuted in 2010 and is a platform that can circumvent any communication issues that might arise among smart devices. If you're concerned that you'll need to learn programming languages to ensure this new feature works, rest assured that all you'll need to do is simply push a few buttons.

IFTTT works by connecting devices, apps, and other services that might not work well together otherwise. It uses "applets," which is when a trigger causes an action. IFTTT regularly releases "recipes" for common devices and apps, but you can customize your own recipes.

For instance, you can use voice commands to turn on electronics in your living room. You can also have the entryway light turn on whenever your smart door lock opens. Another option involves the home's temperature.

If the interior temperature reaches a certain number, your smart device can determine if the electricity price is above a certain threshold. If it is, then the HVAC system won't kick on. However, if it isn't, then it will turn on to make the home more comfortable. Simply put: when "this" happens, "that" is the response.

To help your smart devices work together smoothly, consider implementing IFTTT. This platform can act as a translator between the different languages of your devices and make your life a little simpler.
