So, if you're feeling a little square and out of the loop, have no fear because we've got you covered. But first, a quick primer on hashtags. In social media, using #, or the hashtag (also known as the pound sign) in front of words or phrases, converts them into searchable discussion groups or topics. Hashtags are comprised of endless nouns, verbs, adjectives and like-minded sentiments. For example, if you wanted the scoop on your favorite reality TV show, you'd search #AmazingRace or #BigBrother. A romantic comment or picture might include #love, and someone expressing surprise may say #omg, which stands for "Oh My God." For a detailed hashtag primer click here. And now, the latest and greatest social media apps (which must first be downloaded onto your smartphone before use): Instagram is a social network that enables users to share pictures and videos up to 15 seconds in length. Photos and videos can be tweaked with a number of digital filters, and then shared with Instagram followers, and via Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Flickr. Trendy Instagram hashtags include: #popular, #picoftheday, #bestoftheday, #instadaily and #me. Special Instagrams hashtags also include: #tbt which stands for "Throw Back Thursday," when users post a nostalgic photo from their past, and #love—which can be added to signify something or someone you love—also the most popular Instagram hashtag of 2013! Whisper.sh allows anyone to post anonymous messages, which appear as captions over pictures. Users do not have public identities and can respond to messages with response posts or in private chats. Messages may also contain searchable hashtags. Snapchat lets you share "Snaps," which are photos, videos, text, or drawings, with a specific list of recipients, similar to sending a text message. Users set a time limit for how long recipients can view the snap (currently up to 10 seconds), after which it is hidden from the recipient's device and is deleted from Snapchat servers. According to most users, the time limit is what makes snaps more engaging, since they disappear seconds after being opened. Users tend to send more spontaneous, candid, or personal messages using this app than they do with networks where posts are ingrained into a digital history, such as on Facebook. No hashtags required. Vine is another video-sharing platform which allows users to post quick 6-second videos, or "Vines," from the simple to the highly creative. Connected to a Twitter account, users can easily share and follow others. Popular Vine hashtags include:      #remake - where users remake others' Vines      #LNV - late night Vines      #Howto - small instructional Vines      #Pets - Vines of furry friends
