The Three Types of Workplace Burnout

The Three Types of Workplace Burnout

Despite high unemployment rates, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics recently reported that over 2 million workers quit their jobs last year, a number growing steadily since 2009. Experts suggest this may be due to the increasing demands placed on a shrinking workforce, resulting in occupational burnout.

A global study recently revealed that burnout occurs when professionals ineffectively cope with work-related stress. Burnout can now be categorized into three varieties, and researchers suggest once the distinct type is identified, a proper recovery strategy can be followed.

The three types of burnout identified were:

Overload Burnout: When you're overloaded with work, some on-the-job complaints are to be expected, but when you find yourself with an excessive need to complain or to vent about your company and managers, apply the following tips.

Tips for Managing: If you can avoid it, don't volunteer to take on extra work until you've cleared what's already on your plate. Try to focus on the process rather than the outcome by setting small daily goals so you can meet your deadlines without pressure. And, if possible, delegate less sensitive tasks more often.

Development Burnout: Too many challenges at work can be equally as stressful as too few. If you're feeling under-challenged, you may fall into a pattern of avoidance or distancing yourself from work. Not to be confused with procrastination, this leads to cynicism and, eventually, burn out.

Tips for Managing: When you find yourself feeling unproductive, unchallenged, or avoiding work altogether, it may very well be boredom. You can try seeking more interesting work elsewhere, but if that's not possible it's up to you to create a new experience for yourself at work—ongoing education, new training, or volunteering for more responsibility.

Neglect Burnout: Ensuring that your work goals can be achieved is an important factor in maintaining motivation and enjoying your workday. If you lack motivation to plow through rough patches or aren't responding well to temporary increases in stress, it's a warning sign you shouldn't ignore, and you should apply the following tips.

Tips for Managing: Write down and create a plan and timeline to deal with the factors that currently drain your motivation. Identify your long-term goals including career, home, and especially health, and have a daily plan for each goal, but pay special attention to how your current job might help you meet those goals.

The bottom line is blanket labeling of burnout does little to help resolve the real problem. But if you or someone you know is experiencing workplace burnout, identifying the type may help put you or them on the right road to alleviating stress and pursuing a more productive and fulfilling work life.
