5 Tips to Make Sure Good Habits Stick

You've made a goal to start following good habits, and now you want to make sure you actually keep up with those habits. Consider the following five tips to make sure those good habits stick.

Do It for a Month. Behavior experts say you need about three to four weeks to make a new habit become routine. If you can commit to a new habit for 30 days, you'll make it through the initial conditioning phase, after which the habit becomes easier to sustain.

Be Consistent. The more consistent you are with your habit, the better that habit will stick. For instance, if you want to make exercise a daily habit, try doing it at the same time and same place every day.

Recruit a Friend. Look for a friend who's willing to work with you to make a good habit stick. Having someone who will motivate you can help you through the times you want to slip.

Replace the Habit. If you're giving up a bad habit, make sure you're replacing it with something that will fulfill your needs. For example, if you watched television to relax but you're trying to cut back, consider reading to fill that time.

Remove Temptation. Change your environment so you won't feel tempted to fall back into your old habits. If you're trying to give up junk food, remove it from your house. It's much easier to eat healthy if you don't have any bad options to turn to.

Accept Imperfection. Not every attempt to change your habits will be successful. Instead, try your best and expect a few setbacks along the way.

When you're ready to reach your self-improvement goals, incorporate a few of these tips to help make those good habits stick.
