According to a study in Forbes magazine, student loan debt surpasses credit card debt, auto loans, and even mortgages. With over 44 million United States borrowers with student loans totaling over a trillion dollars, the enormity of trying to pay off a student loan is overwhelming. However, there is hope! If you have a student loan to pay off, follow these tips to help you on the road to financial freedom. Make payments twice per month. It might be easier to split the payments in two. Make half of the payment around the first of the month and then the other half mid-month, according to your pay schedule. Refinance. If you have good credit, you might be able to refinance your loan with a willing lender. If you refinance, look for a lower interest rate. Don't spend beyond your means. If you know you have debt, budget accordingly so you don't miss a student loan payment. You may have to sacrifice dining out or buying the latest fashion shoes, but paying off your debt is far more important. Make double payments. When you can, make an extra payment. The more interest you can pay off, the quicker your debt will go down. Find a job with student loan assistance. Some jobs will offer repayment assistance as a benefit for workers. Use a windfall to pay it off. In the event that you suddenly come into some extra money, use that to pay off your student loan. Stick with your repayment schedule, and someday you'll look at your balance and see that your student loan is paid off! Source: Chamber of Commerce
